With joy and concern we share some prayer requests with you:

* It was refreshing to see many friends (from San Antonio and Abilene) during the Missionary Summit offered by OHC. It was also arenewal to attend the spiritual retreat for the missionaries and learn more about Abiding in Christ. Thank you to OHC Global Outreach team, those who hosted me, and many those who treated me so well!

* This week Dennis and I hosted another ILI seminar (International Leadership Institute).

We had participants from the Amazon to the South of Brazil.     It was uplifting!

* In a couple weeks I will start new classes at the Escola da Bíblia: 

The Book of Proverbs (favorite!), Old Testament Survey and English as an evangelistic effort.

In our church I will start teaching Ecclesiastes next week.

Please, pray that these classes will bring people closer to Christ.

Dear friends and brothers,

Once again we bring you some prayer requests for your quiet time before the Lord. Praying for us is the best way you can support our ministry.

 ·         Hannah and Giselle arrived last February and they are both doing very good. Thank you so much for your prayers throughout their missionary apprenticeship in Bolivia. We ask you continue praying for them as they go through reversal cultural shock.

·         Pioneer Bible Translation (https://pioneerbible.org/) offered a seminar called Discovery here in Recife area. Discovery was a great opportunity to find and meet people who have a heart formissions, mainly for translating the Bible.

·         After Discovery, our family had the opportunity to host one of PBT’s veteran missionaries—Marsha Martin.    It was a tremendous blessing to host someone who has so much experience in life and in missions. Let’s pray that the Lord of the harvest may lift up more missionaries with a heart like Marsha’s.

·         I am teaching almost every day of the week. Pray that more than just passing knowledge, God is using me to pass his transforming Word.

·         Pray for my evangelistic contacts, that they may bear good fruits.

·         Last but not least, pray hard for the political atmosphere in Brazil which is getting very hostile from both left and right wing. Today ex-president Lula is being judged (again!). At the end of the year we have presidential election and he is the main candidate.

Dear friends and brothers in Christ,

We would like to count with your precious prayers for the following points:

* We are moving out to a new apartment Saturday, June 03, Lord willing. It’s a place less than 10 minutes from Dayse’s job and the girls’ school. Pray please for all the stress in moving out!

* Hannah and her team are doing a good job with the church in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. Please continue to pray for their safety and ministry. Winter up there has started.

* Some of my classes will only resume in August. Most of my discipleship groups are going pretty well in terms of frequency and spiritual growth. I’m very pleased with the group who is studying C. S. Lewis “Mere Christianity.”  On top of all these, I also conducted a seminar on the basics of Christian Apologetics to a church north of us. I believe it was very productive.

Please pray that our ministry may bear fruit at the right time.

* Finally last month I had a very eye-opening experience. I met and started ministering to Roberto (27), a newly married guy, battling an aggressive type of cancer. He was not a believer and was near depression, deep angst. After several visits, he targeted me: “I’m ready to die, Bio, but I don’t want to! I want to raise a family.” How to reply to that?  What to share when someone is not ready to meet with his Creator? Death puts life in perspective.

Roberto passed away in peace. Please for his family and widow.

As usual we share here some prayer requests for you to bring before the Father:

* Rain—exactly one week ago we had in our metropolitan area a torrential rain accompanied by a lighting storm like we have never seen before! There were 173 trees uprooted, car accidents and lots of debris. In the same day another city in the interior experienced rain with hail.

Keep praying that these rains may reach far deep into the interior of our region, where it’s still most needed.  Watch this video (in Portuguese) mainly after 03’05”

* Job and new school—this week Dayse and the girls started at their new job/school. It’s a new routine for all of us, mainly for Yasmin. She is loving the school, but it’s quite demanding for her. Pray that we may have strength and wisdom for necessary adjustments.

* Theology Course—in a parallel ministry that I support, we are officially starting a Theology track at the end of February. We agreed on the subjects and books, and we should start advertising next week. Along with another missionary, we will be teaching the very first classes soon. The main purpose of these classes is to launch the basis of theological understanding for future ministers. Pray please for guidance for both of us and my upcoming classes (OT Overview, Apologetics, and God and Philosophy).

* Carnival—tonight Carnival officially starts and tomorrow most of our church in São Lourenço goes to a retreat camp. We earnestly request your prayers for safety for those who will retreat, for those who have to stay in town, and for those joining the throngs in the streets!      Brazilian Carnival is a far lewder version of Mardi Gras.

Dear friends in Christ,

the following prayer requests are of most importance:

* The drought in our region is still severe. They say it’s the worst drought for the past 50 years! There are cities a few miles from us which have water for three days and then without for the next 28 days. Please pray hard that He may open the skies!


* Pray for my friend Cassiano, please. He has been out of drugs since our last e-mail, but he hasn’t attended service nor church activities. He has made some bad choices recently due to his chemical abstinence.

* Dayse is supposed to start this new job in January. Yet there are many question marks unanswered. Also, our daughter Hannah enrolled in a short-term missionary program! We are supporting her in this decision, but we don't know whether it's the Lord's will for her.

* A heartfelt thank-you to all those who prayed for Dayse and her sister Carla at the time of their father’s passing.

Dear friends and prayer supporters in Christ,

Here are some prayer requests for you to bring before our Father:

* Thanksgiving – it has been 10 years now in June since we returned from Abilene, TX, and I finished my studies at ACU. I want to give thanks to a number of people from Oak Hills Church whose names have been a constant support to our lives since early 2002! Also, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to a number of professors from ACU who impacted my life and my theological thinking during those intense years of study.

* Pray please for the students in the classes I have been teaching since February—Apologetics, Basic English [Gospel of Mark], and the Spiritual World. I should conclude these classes by the end of May. Pray that the lessons will be good not just to their heads but their hearts as well.

* Last weekend we had our second Homiletics Training Seminar for new servant-leaders from some of our churches. Pray as we prepare a new generation of servants, that they may be capable of publicly speaking anywhere.

* Drought continues in some parts of Brazil and it is severe here in the Northeast. The raining season has begun but no strong rains so far.

* Dayse and I would appreciate your prayers on behalf of Hannah's decision on what degree she should pursue in college or even if she should put it on hold for while until she makes up her mind.

* Finally, pray please that I may use words wisely.

Dear partner in Christ, here follows some more prayer requests:

* In the last few weeks we had five baptisms—three of them are from the same family! Praise God that there are always open hearts out there and people in the church always willing to share the good news of Jesus. Please pray for these new converts.

* It has rained sporadically since last week; however, we ask your prayers that the Lord may move this rain inland where the situation is really dire.

* Pray please for the health of Dayse’s father. It’s very fragile.

* There are protests against the government scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday 15) in all the major cities of the country. As the economy gets worse, the new buzz word in the media is “oust.”

“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”

Celebrate with us!

With God's help, last weekend we opened a new chapter in the history of our congregation. We had our consecration services of our two facilities for the service of the Kingdom. Besides the comfort, it is a new space for new activities throughout the week.

Tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday 4^th), she will have removed a lump (Chalazia?) from one of her eyelids. Next week the doctors will remove a second lump from her other eyelid. It’s nothing serious but still she will need sedation and local anesthesia.

CCC 2013 – It was truly a blessing to attend another retreat for missionaries down in São Paulo. It was my vacation indeed. This year’s theme was Spiritual Formation and every morning I had one entire hour of solitude in prayer and reading of Scripture.

Oh, how rejuvenating!

Adriano’s baptism finally! – After more than two years attending our services and classes, Adriano finally committed his life to Christ and sealed this union in baptism. Pray for these souls who are learning about the Christian walk and that their commitment will be a lifelong one.

Construction – We saved one Tuesday (October 1^st) night to press forward with the new building construction. We had to finish the floor before one of our couple’s wedding. Our men worked hard until midnight—the wedding was so beautiful.

We have valiant men in our church. Pray for more energy for this project.

Alisha Sneed returned to US last week after two years of daily service to the poor and young girls at our community. She acquired a good command of Portuguese and understanding of our culture. I think she will be an excellent missionary anywhere the Lord sends her. Pray, please, for her reentry process and this next phase of her life.

Dear friends in Christ,

Dara is reading! Our youngest daughter Evelyn Dara started reading this month. The reading magic finally clicked in her head. It’s amazing to watch her discovering the world of letters and words around her!

Furlough in July – Pray we will have a safe, edifying, and connecting time with our spiritual family in Texas. Pray also for our church in São Lourenço, Brazil, as we work hard to develop new servant-leaders.

Bountiful rain – It has rained a lot. The good Lord has supplied well and has heard your prayers. Thank you, folks!

Confederation Cup – have you heard of it? It’s the tournament before the World Soccer Cup. This year and next, Brazil will host both events and one of our brand-new stadiums is just a few miles from our house. First, pray these will be peaceful and safe tournaments. Second, pray authorities will invest the same amount of money in better salaries for our teachers, doctors and nurses, and police officers.

My dear friends,

Please, bring before the Father these important prayer requests, for we know that “the effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

1. Easter Services – we have invited many to attend our Easter services tonight and tomorrow. Pray please that people will come, hear, and changes their lives.

2. Drought – the water shortage in our region has aggravated. Two of our state reservoirs are empty. Many families complain that they only have water once every two weeks. The meteorologists forecast no rain for this and the following year.

But our God is lord rain and lightings!

3. Personal Bible Studies – some of the people I conduct personal Bible studies have discontinued because of silly interruptions or no apparent reason.

4. Traffic in Recife – our metropolitan area was rated as one of the slowest traffic in the world! We waste too much time to get to work and places. Can you pray for that? Pray that our Lord may enlighten me to find better alternatives routes and better traveling times.

* Hannah and Yasmin started a new school year. Hannah is in high school now, and new challenges will come to her. She needs to start thinking what career she wants in life. 

* Carnival week is now and the whole city gets so agitated. It's a bacchanalia at many places around. Our church will not have a spiritual retreat, so pray for safety for us all.

* I spend a lot of time driving either because of ministerial duties or family chores. 

Pray please that I maintain my focus and energy.  

* We have plans to increase the numbers of deacons and maybe ministers, 

starting this year.   May the Lord may raise the right men.

Dear prayer partners in the Kingdom of Heaven,

Here are some prayer requests we bring to your attention:

Drought – According to authorities the Northeast of Brazil is go through one of the most severe droughts in the last 40 years. Sadly, the cause of much suffering to our people is due to poor administration along the years, viz., corruption and political games.  

Tragedy – A dear couple of our church were hit by a drunken hit-and-run 23 year old man last Saturday, December 8. Our sister died at the moment and her husband is still in the hospital. She left a two year boy and their families are suffering a lot with such injustice. Her father fears that the culprit will go unpunished. Pray for heavenly comfort and [divine] justice.

Hannah – Our daughter turned 15! Similar to Mexican Quinceañera, we gave her a party, invited church people and friends, and prayed the Lord will guide her future.

Training – We finished our studies in the book of First Corinthians and had a regular number of 22 students. This Tuesday class focused more on new converts and, Lord willing, the group will continue in 2013 studying The Parables of Jesus. Pray these new converts will firm their faith in Jesus only and no one else.

Discipleship – Pray for these names: Adriano Gomes, Lucian, Bill, Hugo and Adriano. These are people I am either mentoring or trying to bring into Christ.

Charity – We prepared 90 food baskets and handed out to several people tonight and will do more throughout the week. Pray that more than just feeding bodies and we may feed hungry souls and bring light into their hearts.

1. Small churches in the interior of our State (Pernambuco) are in need of growth and support. Pray that the Lord of the harvest may send more laborers.

2. Wilson is a brother from one of our churches in the interior. He is awaiting his turn to come to the capital Recife and have his liver transplant. Pray for the success of his surgery and that he may find a place to stay while awaits the transplant and recovery.

3. There is so much evil in the world but one of our weapons is evangelism.
Pray that our evangelism may never lose momentum. Pray that we may feel compassion for the unchurched.

Dear friends and supporters:

 

We want to try a new format of reporting our work.
We will send twice a month a brief and objective list of three prayer requests and/or thanksgiving. Thus, we don't want to take much of your time, yet inform and involve you of our family and ministerial activities. Moreover, your prayers are our most important support.

So, here we go!

 

1. It's election year here---lots of "crickets." Pray the Lord may send good candidates who will do more than just the same old promises.

 

2. We have had some people dropping out from faith/church. This month I'm preaching on the Perseverance of the Saints.

 

3. The building constructions is now being carried out by our own members. Pray we may have endurance and achieve our goal for completion at the end of 2012!

Yesterday was a beautiful Saturday at Santo Amaro Cemetery.             A''H

At 2:45am, mom’s heart stopped after battling an infection due to a pulmonary embolism after her fall. She was 83 years old but her spirit was alive as ever. 

Last time I visited her at ICU, I could clearly see she was so unhappy being bedridden at that gloomy room. The Lord is good always.

Dennis’ eulogy at the funeral was very uplifting. My brother Alberes led songs with power. Brother Mozart closed with a beautiful prayer. And, I could visit relatives I hadn’t seen in many years. Nevertheless, how could I not notice the providence in the details as of when and where that ceremony was being held. The cemetery was close to the place where every Saturday afternoon, approximately at same time, mom would take me to a Boy Scout’s group. We used to walk through those same streets religiously. She took me there in hopes that I would be a better man. The same she did taking me to school and to church. She accomplished her mission trying to educate me—a woman who never even learned to sign up her own name—a woman of vision.

I praise God for the mom he gave me.

I praise God for the family he gave me.

I praise God for the church he gave me.
